We love Oxford shirts. If we’re wearing a button shirt, it’s most likely a variation on an Oxford shirt. We like the softness, the durability, and we like the versatility.
What is an Oxford shirt?
The definition of an Oxford reads as follows: A shirt made from an Oxford cloth is woven out of cotton with a basket weave structure. Abbreviated by die-hard Ivy style enthusiasts as the OCBD, the Oxford Cloth Button Down is a shirt of American origin worn traditionally as a sporting shirt that almost always has the following attributes:
Button down collar
Chest Pocket
Exposed placket
Fuller cut
Buttoned barrel cuff
Center back pleat usually with a laundry loop
Who wears Oxfords shirts?
In short, the Oxford cloth shirt belongs to everyone. There are so many ways to do an Oxford cloth shirt, and so many possibilities that there’s no surprise as to why it’s been worn by anyone from finance yuppies, journalists in warzones, artists and poets, and your dear old father. In the right configuration, it can see the average person through almost everything their day will throw at them, and will need little more than a machine wash and a quick iron.
Where can I wear an Oxford shirt?
We are firm believers in the Oxford weave’s capability to be cut for different lifestyles and fit a range of different occasions. For the office? Pick a finer oxford weave and opt for placket-less front, trimmer fit, knife back pleats, a hidden button-down or tennis collar, and lose the front chest pocket. Want something a little more everyday or utilitarian? Opt for a loose fit, classic button-down collar, and maybe add a second chest pocket. Pick a heavier cloth, add flaps to your front chest pockets and treat it like an overshirt.
